4/16/21 Garden update

Peas, market mustard, and turnips are sprouting in far NW bed planted last week despite frost 3 times last week and temperatures mainly in the 40s. It was a nice day to be outside in the afternoon, 40F, moderate wind, and mostly sunny. Greenhouse got up to 80F. Coldframe was just below 70F.

Planted near NW bed, watered, then covered to protect from birds and frost.

Moved Easter Egg radish seedlings from greenhouse to cold frame.

Planted Daikon radish and pumpkin microgreens

Planted peppers, tomatoes, ground cherries, and tomatillos. Bojangle peppers coming up but not Arbole, Ancho, or Jalapeno. I really want some ancho and arbole peppers to make pozole. I think those peppers impart the right flavor. Also planting "salsa" pepper blend. We may end up with a lot of peppers.

4/13/22 Plants growing in greenhouse. Sorrel is up.

Weather has been nice during the day so moved plants back outside. Except I plan to bring in tom hat tomato if 30F temperatures predicted at night

2 sorrel and some sort of self seeded green, probably Kale, or maybe Mustard is coming up. Of course the dandelions are starting up. 

Daffodils, Lillys, and sedums are growing by mailbox.

4/12/22 indoor microgreen and outdoor coldframe update

Daikon radish, turnip, cantaloupe, and sunflower microgreens growing well in kitchen.

Coldframe:

Peas have sprouted in house so planted them in coldframe. Roots started to come out the bottom of the pot. Tore off the pot bottom before planting them. You can see the frosted new zealand spinach. I don't think it's cold hardy. Maybe it will come back when the weather gets warmer. There was morning frost 2 days this week. Temperature has been in the 30s at night.

Carrot ends are sprouting but keep getting frosted.

Oregano is returning from last year. (Still smaller than the claytonia)

Leaves sprouting from celery end.

Leaves sprouting from Romaine endpiece.

This beet is growing good. It was originally started indoors then moved to coldframe towards end of March.

2 Rhubarb plants coming up but not the corner one yet. Walking onions growing good.

4/11/22 planted small part of patio garden

 First I created a path between the garden and end of fence that I planted with mostly clover and the remaining mixed aphrodite alyssum. I covered it with straw but the wind keeps blowing it off.

Planted peas, radishes, turnips, beets, and greens then used juice jugs as cloches, partially dug in and surrounded by straw so they don't blow away.

4/10/22 planted northwest garden bed

 Planted greens, dill, and peas in northwest garden bed.

Made little green house covers with plastic salad containers and bamboo sticks. However still had to weight everything down with branches to keep wind from blowing containers away.

4/14/22 Southwest winds of 25-30 mph with gusts up to 50. Containers still covering garden. It's about 40F and Sunny but the wind steals the heat from everything. Coldframe and greenhouse are about 70F.

4/8/22 Planted arugula in indoor garden

Everything is growing so slow. Probably because it is so cold out side so decided to plant indoor garden. Used 2" pots. I can always move everything outside later.
