Half double, double, triple/treble crochet

So far we have concentrated on single crochet variations
  • crochet in front loop, back loop, alternating front and back loop
  • crochet 2 in one stitch then skipping a stitch pattern
  • crocheting down into a lower row to form a "v" like appearance
Now it's time to go over some additional stitches. You can of course do all the above variations with the following stitches.

Half double crochet. This is the stitch I use the most, it works up pretty quickly and fills in pretty well.

Double crochet
(Starting in 3rd ch from hook, yo hook, pick up loop, then yo hook and pull thru 2 loops 2x)
Standard procedure is to
  • chain 3 to use as a stitch at end of row,
  • then skip a stitch while crocheting across
  • then put a stitch in the top of the chain 3 at the end of the row.
However this leaves a hole along the side. I did the triple crochet below in a different manner which worked better than I expected.

Triple or Treble Crochet
Start in 4th chain from hook (Do not count chain on hook)
yo over hook 2x
pick up loop
then yo hook and go through 2 loops 3x

To keep holes from edge of fabric,
after chain 4, triple crochet in next stitch, count stitches and do not put triple crochet in top of chain 4 at end of row.

There's also
  • Double Triple crochet (DTR) where you wrap the yarn 3 times and then YO and pull through 2 loops 4 times, and
  • Triple Triple crochet (DTR) where you wrap the yarn 4 times and YO and pull through 2 loops 5 times.
You'll get very holey fabric, suitable for doilies, lace, and ????

It was a crazy day weather wise when I made these samples. It varied from sunny, to very dark and stormy with thunder and lighting. So some pictures are with natural daylight and some are with yellow artificial light.
