The stitch abbreviations are in American Crochet. I like to use to European Symbols to draw out directions. European symbols mimic crochet stitch appearance.

Basic, work horse crochet stitches

Crocheting into a foundation chain
Slip Stitch, SS or Sl St,
Single Crochet, SC, European symbol is a plus (+) sign and variations
Half double (HDC or "T" symbol), double(DC or "T" with line or slash through it symbol), triple/treble crochet (TC or "T" with 2 lines or slashes through it symbol)
