Starting Single Crochet without a foundation chain

This is also known as "extended" or "no chain" SC (single crochet). I first encountered this when i crocheted a sock. This was used to make an opening for the heel.

1st Stitch

• Ch 2, insert hook in "v" of 2nd ch
• yo (yarn over) and pull loop through ch (2 loops on hook)
• yo and pull through 1 loop (2 loops on hook)
• yo and pull through both loops (1 loop on hook)

2nd Stitch

• Insert hook under "v" of foundation chain of stitch #1
• yo, pull loop through ch
• yo, pull through 1 loop
• yo, pull through both loops

Repeat until piece is as long as you want it to be.
