Crochet an oval by increasing and crocheting in the round on a foundation chain

This is one method I used to make rag rugs but I usually crochet into loops.

K hook, lavender 4 ply yarn
Use Single crochet stitch
Crocheted on same side (Don't turn piece at end or row)
Crocheted into "spine" of foundation chain
Used yarn to mark beginning of row

Abbreviations and symbols that I've learned so far
  • Single crochet, SC, +
  • Slip stitch, sl st,       .
  • Chain, ch, (a flattened "0" shape lying on it's side.)
  • SC Increase,
  • SC Decrease, sc2tog, sc3tog

Chain 9 (not counting loop on hook)

Rows
  1. Increase by stitching 3 sc into 2nd loop from hook, then 7sc, the Increase by stitching 3 sc into last chain, then 7sc into other side of foundation chain, then slip stitch to join row and chain 1.
  2. 3 sc Increase, 9sc, 3 sc Increase, 9sc, slip stitch to join row, chain 1
  3. 3 sc Increase, 11 sc, 3 sc Increase, 11sc, slip stitch to join row

Now if you were making a rug you would keep going and besides increasing at the ends of the rows you would make increases when and where needed to keep the rug flat and a nice shape. Maybe I will demonstrate how to crochet a rug in the future. I usually cut T-shirts in a spiral rather than strips and I don't sew them together. I like T-shirts because they are stretchy and easier to crochet then woven, tearable fabrics.
