Increasing and Decreasing at outer edge of row to make diamond shape

I am continuing to use the large K hook with light colored 4 ply yarn so stitches can be seen easier.

HALF DOUBLE CROCHET DIAMOND
(Increasing)
  • Chain 3,
  • Row 1: 2 hdc in 2nd chain from hook, chain 2 (to be counted as hdc in next row)
  • Row 2: 2 hdc in one stitch, ch 2
  • Row 3: hdc, hdc, then increase by 2 hdc in one stitch, ch 2
  • Row 4: 1 hdc next to ch 2 (counts as increase) then hdc, hdc, then increase 2 hdc in same stitch, ch2

(Decreasing)
  • Row 5: decrease by 1 hdc in top of ch 2 and adjoining stitch, hdc, decrease by hdc in next 2 stitches, ch2
  • Row 6: decrease by 1 hdc in next 2 stitches, ch 2
  • Row 7: decrease by 1 hdc in 2 stitches

(Note: I like to put the hdc in the stitch next to the chain 2 rather than into the top of the previous row's chain 2 to avoid hole in the piece.)

Now this diamond was more elongated due to the taller hdc stitch so I repeated it in SC.

SINGLE CROCHET DIAMOND

(increase is made by 2 sc in one stitch)
  • Row 1: chain 3, 2 sc in 2nd chain from end of hook, ch 1
  • Row 2:  2 sc increases, ch 1 (4 stitches)
  • Row 3: sc increase, then 2 sc, then sc increase (6 stitches)
  • Row 4: sc increase, then 4 sc, then sc increase (8 stitches)
  • Row 5: sc increase, then 6 sc, then sc increase (10 stitches)

(decrease is made by stitching 1 sc through 2 sc of previous row)
  • Row 6: sc decrease, then 6 sc, then sc decrease (8 stitches)
  • Row 7: sc decrease, then 4 sc, then sc decrease (6 stitches)
  • Row 8: sc decrease, then 2 sc, then sc decrease (4 stitches)
  • Row 9: sc decrease 2x (2 stitches)
  • Row 10: sc decrease (1 stitch)
